The history of Great Ormond Street hospital
Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is a world-renowned children’s hospital located in London, United Kingdom. It is one of the leading paediatric medical institutions in the world, specializing in the treatment of children with complex and rare medical conditions. GOSH (then known as The Hospital for Sick Children) opened its doors at 49 Great Ormond Street on Valentine’s Day 1852 with 10 beds and has a long history of providing exceptional care to children in need.
The hospital offers a wide range of medical services, including surgery, intensive care, various specialist clinics, and research facilities. One of the notable aspects of GOSH is that it relies heavily on charitable donations to fund its work and research. The hospital is associated with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, which helps raise funds to support the hospital’s mission.
GOSH is known for its dedication to advancing paediatric healthcare, and it has made significant contributions to medical research and treatment, particularly in areas related to children’s health. The hospital is often a centre for innovative medical procedures and therapies, making it an important institution in the field of paediatric medicine.
Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity undertakes fundraising activities to invest in development, research and innovation, welfare and clinical development projects, medical equipment, and capital
infrastructure, all of which will enhance Great Ormond Street Hospital’s ability to transform the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
How Does Sunflower support?
At Sunflower Nursery, we support Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in several ways, contributing to the well-being of young patients and their families. Here are some ways in which we help GOSH
- Fundraising: we organize fundraising events or activities to raise money for the hospital. This can includes sponsored walks, bake sales, charity days, or other creative initiatives such as taking the children out to visit local doctors surgeries to help them understand the different professional roles of peoples who help us, and then help to make the connection between the charity and what we experience when we become ill..
- The funds collected when we do hold GOSH charity events, get donated directly to GOSH, to support their ongoing work in paediatric healthcare.
- For donations we encourage parents, staff, and the local community to make direct donations to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Regular or one-time contributions can make a significant difference in the hospital’s ability to provide care and conduct research.
- At Sunflower we welcome and support GOSH to help raise awareness and the work they do. This can be done through educational activities as mentioned before which include events that teach children about the hospital and the importance of helping others.
- Toy and gift donations: we sometimes organize toy drives or collection campaigns to gather toys and gifts for the young patients at GOSH and to Fatima’s Food Bank. These items can help make a child’s hospital stay more comfortable and enjoyable, as well as helping other families within our local area.
At Sunflower we like to include such diverse educational programs and resources to instil values in children. Teaching empathy, compassion, and the importance of helping others is crucial for their development. The inclusion of British Values adds a cultural perspective to their learning journey.
